Ethics for public leadership
Introduction
Conflict is an unavoidable aspect of everyday life. Whether it be with others, yourself or an organization, conflict is an inevitable aspect of life experience.
As for organizations, there are many kinds of conflicts. Different minds between you and your coworkers may arise conflict. You have to get a position, which may arise conflict with your competitors. Different business segments about the role-set of a project may arise conflict. Besides, conflict exists in any organization, and there is no exception to government. A quite controversial issue that relates to different governments may arise conflict. Different departments and political parties’ interests about an important problem may arise conflict.
There are dozens of other conflicts within and among organizations as well, which it mentioned.
When speaking of conflict, what would immediately come into mind would most likely be how differences and disagreements make such an occurrence to spring up. Taking a look into what common causes conflict can help everybody understand this phenomenon even more. Hence, what are the factors that make conflict arise? Let someone put into attention the three main sources of conflict as proposed by American psychologist Daniel Katz. According to him, conflict arises primarily due to these three: economic conflict, value conflict and power conflict (Rawls, 1972).
Power conflict occurs when the parties involved intends to maximize what influence it has in the social setting. Such a situation can happen among individuals, groups or even nations. In other types of conflict, power is also evident as it involves an asserting of influence to another.
Conflict within and among organization is a sign of poor leadership, so conflict management is the organization’s important work.
In an organization, ethics in leadership are critical. Business leaders must make decisions that will not only benefie them, but also they must think about how the other people will be affected. The best leaders demonstrate and clarify their values and their ethics and preach them in their leadership style and actions. These actions consists of communicating complete and accurate information, where there is a personal, professional, ethical, or legal obligation to do so (Katz, 1965). When leaders practice ethics, they gain the respect and admiration of employees, with the satisfaction of knowing they are making the most moral choice. If a leader never makes their actions or choice clear to others, those choices can be seen as a sign of mistrust.
Conclusion
All in all, ethics in leadership are important for the leaders to consider how their decisions impact others. Motivating followers to put the needs or interests of the group ahead of their own is an important quality of ethical leaders. Motivating involves engaging others in an intellectual and emotional commitment between leaders and followers that makes both parties equally responsible in the pursuit of a common goal.
