Introduction

What is good teaching? This is a complex question with no easy answers. There has been lots of research on it. Biggs (2012) argues that good teaching is a method that narrows the gap between academic students and non-academic students. This essay will first describe the gap and following this, it will discuss how to narrow the gap.

 

Students usually are divided into two categories according to their behaviors: academic students and non-academic students. Academic students have clear plans on what and how they need to improve. They do some research on what they will learn on class and seek out what they don’t understand. In the lecture, they find answers. They use a deep approach connecting what they have learned, while the non-academic students use a surface approach, only memorizing facts      and fragmented knowledge. According to some teaching strategies, it is considered that the academic performance completely depends on students themselves. The task of teachers is only to transmit information despite the variability in student learning.

In order to narrow the gap caused by difference in student learning, teachers should help students who are less academically committed to make clear plans and motivate them to engage more in class. This could be done by creating an aligned system of objectives, teaching and assessment.

The first stage is to develop rational objectives. With objectives, students will know exactly on which level they are and what they need to improve. Verbs are helpful to make it clear to students what action they should take (John, 2012). And when developing objectives, teachers should base on students’ future needs, which will make students realize the importance of what they are learning.

Then it comes to teaching. In the lecture, teachers are expected to create encouraging context to engage students in lecture, such as discussion or presentation. The lecture should be aligned with the objectives, For example, if the objective is to be professionally competent, teachers should provide more opportunities where students can put theories into practice.

Accordingly, the assessment should also be aligned with objectives and teaching. In this case, the assessment should be in the way of testing students’ professional practice, instead of declarative knowledge. Otherwise, the students would focus more on tests, instead of tasks. Assessment can tell students whether they are successful in learning and address what teachers what them to achieve, that is, what the objectives demand.

The whole system of objectives, teaching and assessment is an interactive system. Objectives define what teaching method should be chosen and in what way the assessment goes. Teaching help students engage in academic, achieving objectives efficiently. Assessments address the objectives and test if teaching is successful.

 

Conclusion

To conclude, good teaching helps most students learn through the cognitive level processes that academic students use spontaneously. The aligned system of objectives, teaching and assessment allows less academically-admitted students to capitalize on the process, which enables them learn more efficiently. So the aligned practice is likely to be a good teaching method.
